Local Information about Wittersham, Kent

This self catering Kent holiday cottage is situated in a rural location not far from the villages of Iden and Wittersham, in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Prospect Cottage is not far from the pretty Kentish town of Tenterden and less than five miles from the famous Cinque Port town of Rye.

The picturesque town of Rye is only a few minutes' drive and has enchanting cobbled streets, medieval church and beautifully preserved historic houses from medieval, Tudor and Georgian times. It is almost suspended in time and has a uniquely unhurried atmosphere. Rye Pottery is definitely worth a visit, with its beautiful lettered mugs and plates and hand painted majolica decorated figures. If you enjoy browsing antique/shabby chic furniture shops, there is plenty to keep you busy in Rye. It has great pubs and restaurants and pretty little unique small shops and cafes to discover. You can even buy freshly caught fish from the harbour!

Camber Sands with its fabulous sandy dunes and miles of beach is just 20 minutes away. Not forgetting charming Winchelsea, famous for its picturesque village centre and great coastline. There is sailing, windsurfing and even kite surfing on hand for those who can't sit still on a beach!

Wittersham stands high in the middle of the Isle of Oxney, which was once an island surrounded by sea water. The village sign shows an image of a longship, which refers back to the Danish invasion of Appledore in 892. It is very likely that the Danes occupied the Isle of Oxney, as a vantage point to view the troops of King Alfred the Great who it is believed were based at Newenden . The local vineyards at Chapel Down are well worth a visit - wine tasting followed by a delicious local meal.

As Kent has more castles than any other county there are lots to visit during your stay at this luxury holiday cottage - particularly the beautiful moated Leeds Castle and Bodiam Castle, which is close by. The steam railway runs from Tenterden to Bodiam where you can even book dinner in the high season.
