Holiday Cottage in Winchelsea Beach, Sussex
from £472 pwSleeps 8
Cuckoos is a well-loved spacious single storey cottage on a quiet residential road, next to a placid stream where ducks will welcome new arrivals! We love the sheltered enclosed garden at the rear, which is a real suntrap and backs onto Rye Harbour Nature Reserve where an abundance of wildlife can be seen and heard. There's side access from the kitchen to the rear garden with a sheltered patio, wooden garden furniture and pergola. The lawned front garden is also large, peaceful and spacious and even has its own Wendy house, overlooked from the sitting room to keep an eye on younger children!
The interior layout of the holiday rental is easy and comfortable, with a large lounge/dining area and overhead fans for hot summer evenings; a lovely space to relax and enjoy a meal after a busy day sightseeing or at the beach. There are plenty of books, DVDs and WiFi to keep you occupied and every room is well decorated and furnished. There are 2 bathrooms and 4 bedrooms.
The house accepts well-behaved dogs and is a great base for walkers and cyclists with its easy access to coastal paths, woodland walks and nature reserves.
The house is within 600m as the crow flies of Winchelsea Beach's pebble bank, often clad with brilliant wild flowers, at high tide and at low tide extensive flat sands are revealed - plenty to do and see for everyone, especially the kids. It's just 20 minutes across the fields to walk to mysterious Camber Castle and its nearby bird hide.
Locally, there's a Co-op store open every day which is just 8 minutes' walk; the local pub is even nearer and has its own deli and butcher. Winchelsea and Romney Marsh is a real 'foodie' area with excellent local produce, fresh fish, farm shops, delis and good eating in pubs.

Founded seven centuries ago by Edward I, historic Winchelsea has a fascinating medieval history and along with Rye (3 miles drive or bike ride) is one of the confederation of Cinque Ports which are a series of ancient coastal towns in Kent and Sussex noted for their trade links and military importance.
Today Rye is a vibrant town with pretty cobbled streets and a delight for shoppers and 'foodies' with its variety of cafés, delis and restaurants.
The area is noted for its bird, insect and flower life. Migrating birds fill the sky when they're on the move, or feed at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve where there are hides to see undisturbed birds close up. All this will be on your doorstep; great for walkers and cyclists alike given the flat terrain - there's plenty of off-road cycling tracks too. An inspiration for photographers and artists - there is so much of interest.
For the more energetic visitors, a visit to Camber (6 miles) for golf, windsurfing or kite-surfing as well as dune walks and many more miles of sandy beach is a must.
Winchelsea Beach and Rye are in the heart of Romney Marsh; there are castles, historic houses, galleries and gardens galore within easy reach.
Fabulous Bodiam Castle is just 14 miles, with Great Dixter' astonishing gardens on the way, and the literary Lamb House is centrally located in Rye. Astonishing Sissinghurst Castle and garden in Kent is a good day out too!
For visitors from abroad the Channel Tunnel terminal is only 32 miles and Dover port is a little over an hour's drive from the holiday rental. London is less than 90 minutes and there are mainline railway stations in Rye (3 miles) and Winchelsea (1 mile, less frequent) with services to Ashford International, London and Hastings.London Gatwick Airport is 63 miles.
