Local Information about Burwash, Sussex

The area has much to offer with a thriving village with all the local shops you might need, including the odd antique and tea shop to pop into whilst you are there. Rudyard Kipling's house, Bateman's, is just outside the village and well worth a visit, with the wonderful gardens at Pashley Manor, Bedgebury Pinetum and Sissinghurst Castle within half an hour. On your way back from a day out, why not stop off afterwards in several of the local villages nearby or in the village of Burwash itself, with its Norman church, smugglers' gravestones with skull and crossbones and 17th century pubs? The Corn Stores is next door to Kipling's actual butcher (Jarvis family since 1870), where you can buy some famous "Burwash Beauty" sausages! Take a look at the historic listed houses situated in this conservation area. And lastly, walk at least one of the splendid public footpaths, crossing farms and cottage gardens, before finishing your day in the Burwash village tea rooms for some well-deserved refreshment! A few minutes' walk away there is a recreation ground with a small play park for young children and fields for walking the dogs.

Further afield, the cottage is within easy reach of both the long sandy beach at Camber with its excellent range of water sports and Bewl Water where again there are lots of water sports on offer, together with fishing and cycling.

The charming town of Mayfield, Ticehurst and Wadhurst are approximately twenty minutes to the north and Royal Tunbridge Wells with the wonderful Pantiles shopping is within thirty minutes. Hastings old town, Eastbourne and other delightful county towns are also easily accessible from here.
